Things I Love

5th Sunday of Easter | April 28, 2021
Just these lines, my friends …

… to say that I’m loving the privilege that is mine to see your faces again in Sunday morning worship. We have one more week of our test groups and then Sunday, May 9, we will open to all, or at least the first 175 who register within the reservation system at OnRealm.org. Openings will be available on this staggered schedule: Monday (May 3) at 8:00 am, Tuesday (May 4) at 7 pm, and Wednesday (May 5) at Noon. Upcoming special services include Confirmation (May 16 at 9:15 & 11:00 am) and Graduation Sunday (June 6 at 11:00 am). If you missed this past Sunday, you can watch our worship services here.

A special word of thank you to our many volunteers who make it all happen around here: United Kids servant leaders making it possible for our young families to build community together on Friday night in the parking lot, United Youth servant leaders setting up staging and conducting small groups in the parking lot on Sunday night, servant leaders pitching in on Monday morning to helping with the vaccination clinic in our parking lot, servant leaders making sure our virtual All-Church Gathering happens on Monday night … and so much more. WOW! Has our parking lot been a place of hope and ministry the past 15 months or what?! What would we do without the hundreds of servant-hearted people that make God’s love real in and through Matthews United Methodist Church (MUMC)?  Thank you! Thank you!

Wednesday Devotional

I hope you will take the time to watch my devotional for today titled, “Things I Love.” It will only take a few minutes of your time. Please click here to watch.

Disciple Bible Study Outreach

Disciple Bible Study is one of the best things The United Methodist Church has ever done. Thousands upon thousands of people have deepened their understanding of the stories of our faith through this intensive study. Disciple Bible Study Outreach takes the study deeper and connects incarcerated women to Disciple Bible Study programs at church or in prison.

Trish Pegram, the Global Impact Champion for the ministry, shares “The whole experience of Disciple Bible Study is transformational, life changing and consistent with Wesley’s small group practices.  In my personal life, it was part of the process which led me to seminary and ordination as a deacon in the UMC.  Life changing indeed!”

You are invited to partner with Disciple Bible Study Outreach and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office to support individuals discharged without basic necessities. Global Impact is sponsoring a collection of: White Towels/Washcloths; Travel-Size Toothpaste, Hairbrush, Bottled Water, & Backpacks. Please place items in the Breezeway Bin by May 10. You can get more details here.

All-Church Gathering

Please watch our All-Church Gathering if you missed it on Monday night to hear about our playground renovation, financial update, Telra Charter School leasing space at MUMC, among other things going on in & through the ministries of MUMC.

This Sunday in Worship

We invite you to join us for online worship this Sunday at 9:15 am (Contemporary), 11:00 am (Traditional) or 12:45 (Spanish).

This week, in our CCH community, Pastor Roldan will begin a new worship series, A Church, Well Built. He will be preaching from Acts 3:12-20 with his message titled, A Message to Preach.

At 9:15 am and 11:00 am we will be in week five of our worship series titled Easter Earthquake! How the Resurrection Rocks the World. We have spent these weeks wrestling with the following question: What difference does the resurrection make in the way we face the crucial issues/crisis/concerns of our time? This week we’ll be digging deep into the Crisis of Suffering from I Peter 1:3-9.  I hope to share with you a few things I’ve learned about life in the crucible of suffering.

And now, as always, during these strange, uncertain, tumultuous, perilous and hopeful days of pandemic remember … God does God’s best work in moments like this.

We are in this … together,
Dr. Charles (Chuck) W. Wilson II

Did you know that the old Playground is being removed to make way for a new one? The equipment has arrived will be installed soon! We can’t wait for kids to enjoy this new treasure on campus as we return! The Study Group is also making great headway on the proposal to leaders for what might be next for exciting new weekday children’s programming.

Did you know that our United Youth Staff Team delivered “2021 MUMC Youth High School Graduate” signs over 45 graduates’ yards? Congratulations to them all! What an incredible group of men and women that we look forward to celebrating in worship on Sunday, June 6.

Did you know that it has been over a year since the tornado took down the 110-year-old pecan tree that stood in front of the Matthews HELP Center? We are grateful that members of the Faith Class spent a morning beautifying the flower bed and planting a legacy Dogwood in its place!
