Youth will explore and live into this theme throughout United Youth during 2021-2022. "I must decrease." Is there a more countercultural statement than that? Our world tells us that we should always put ourselves first. In the infamous words of Ricky Bobby from Taledega Nights, “If you’re not first, your last.” But John’s gospel challenges us to think differently.
In the first few chapters of the Gospel of John, John (the Baptist) has already gained several followers. He was "the voice crying out in the wilderness," telling of the coming of Jesus. He had a great ministry. And then, Jesus came and began his own ministry. John's disciples were worried that people were turning their attention to Jesus. Just like with social media, they were worried about John losing "likes" and followers. But John challenged them. He says in chapter 3 verse 28, "You yourselves can testify that I said that I'm not the Christ but the one that is sent before him." He goes on in verse 30-31, "He must increase and I must decrease. The one who comes from above is above all things. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all things." Basically, John says it is not about him, but about Jesus.
