Outside the Box: May-cember

Outside the Box: May-cember

There are so many cool Hebrew words in the Old Testament. Two of those words the Psalms often bring to the forefront are “hesed” and “selah” (tune in Sunday to see what the meaning is of these words and the difference that they make). We are going to examine those words (a little bit) on Sunday as we read Psalm 66:8-20 for our centering scripture in worship. I hope you will read through that passage as God forms a sermon in us. We are going to be talking about receiving God’s faithful love.

This past week in worship, we experienced God’s faithful love through Pastor Susan’s inspiring sermon, beautiful music from our praise team, and a solo from Philip Tate. Our chancel choir gave a “knock your socks off” performance at 11 am with solos from Byron Murphy, our incredible Praise Team Director, and Elizabeth Carpenton, a choir member. If you missed worship, link to our 9:30 & 11:00 am services.

The month of May has come to be known as “May-cember,” because this month gets as busy as December! A lot is happening, and we are all being pulled in many different directions. Hopefully, as busy as church can be, we are all able to find a grounding in what we do and in who we are as a church. Thank you for your investment in telling the story of Jesus through Matthews United Methodist Church!

Please view my weekly video to find out more about what is happening at Matthews UMC. Check our website regularly, which offers ways to invite others to consider our church. It is easy to share the website, information, and services.

I look forward to being in ministry with you this week!

In Christ’s Service,
David Christy

Did you know that Men’s Breakfast attendees heard about two programs on Saturday? Matthews Police Chief James Avens and other officers spoke about the “Blue Santa” program. Reggie Singleton, founder and executive director of The Males Place (our Global Impact partner), spoke about their youth development program.

Did you know that several adult volunteers from Troop 39 repainted the main room of the Eagle’s Nest? The room had not been painted since it was constructed in 2007. Volunteers also took the time to rehang some of the ceiling tiles and to clean the rafters. The Troop really appreciated the church donating the paint for the job!

Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness month? MUMC hosts monthly support groups for family and friends of people with mental health conditions. If you know of someone who could benefit from our Mental Health Fair (May 16 from 9-12), please share that there will be free resources and workshops for adults and children. Event hosted by MUMC Mental Health Ministry in partnership with BlueCross BlueShield NC Healthy Blue.

Did you know that Renee Gillespie from Age-Level Ministries won the MUMC STAFF BINGO competition? Each staff member received a card with blocks featuring fun things like “Pastor David sings at you!” and “Received a Thank You Card from a Church member.” GOAT medals were awarded to Renee (1st Place) and Pastor Corey (2nd Place)!
